I’ve been to…

I got back last night from a trip to ….

This is a photo of the lungolago at Capodimonte in northern Lazio which is where we were based during the past two weeks.

It was a working holiday as we had some tasks to achieve with our house there (and we did succeed).  I also managed to engage with mostly the physical world, switching off almost entirely from the virtual one.

It has been just over a year since I last walked on Italian soil and leading up to my trip I was so excited about going back there.

I felt I almost had to pinch myself when I was waiting at the airport ready to head there.  It just seemed too surreal.

I thought I would share with you some of my first impressions of Italy once I’d landed.

Let’s start with the casual attitude of the man at passport control who just looked at my passport and simply handed it back – no stamp…

Let me see, then there was the heat as we left the Fiumicino airport’s building to head to the car.  There was a bit of a traffic jam…  I saw a car in the car park patched up with masking tape.

The oleander bushes in the centre of the autostrada.

As we reached the first toll booth, a regional train came up beside us.

Pictured below are the fresh beans and zucchini flowers that our neighbours gave us on our first full day there.  We made a batter for the flowers and fried them and they all got eaten really quickly.

This is the bounty that we took home after visiting my husband’s grandfather and aunts who live in the Benevento province (near Naples).  I love watching my husband’s aunt cook.  She has a real passion for food and makes the most delicious things.  We ate really well the couple of days that we stayed with them.

How wonderful that you got to go back ,, 🙂 I love the way my cousin cooks too, she lives in Grado North East Italy , her cooking is amazing too.

    • It sure was great Anne. Do you have a particular dish of your cousin’s that you love?

  • I’m so happy you got to return to your beloved Italy, Cathy! 🙂 That is absolutely brilliant. 🙂 I loved hearing your first impressions and smiled because I had flashes of recognition as I read them. 🙂 Cracking up about the masking tape fix-it job on the car. How hilarious. 🙂

    • Thank you Krista. Glad to hear you had some flashes of recognition there. It isn’t the first time I’ve seen a car patched up with masking tape 😉

Oh my goodness, you made me feel quite homesick Cathy, strange emotions. xx

    • Dear Linda, I am sorry to hear that. I can understand why you feel a bit strange. You are one of the readers of this blog who have actually been to these places. You know Capodimonte and you know our house xx
