Orvieto’s Duomo and Torre di Maurizio

I have added a few photos of my own to my Dad’s post about Orvieto’s stunning Duomo and the nearby Torre di Maurizio.

Snapshots from a Tourist in Italy

The Duomo

Described as the jewel of Romanesque Architecture, it may have been done before. The magnificent façade with the Rose window is one of the enduring images of Orvieto. However, it is for the sides that you appreciate the alternate courses of local tufo (the cream stone) and basalt (the dark grey).

Torre di Maurizio

Near the duomo is the Torre di Maurizio, the tower was originally erected as a sundial.

I totally agree with you Janine about the first shot. I love it as you drive down that hill and can look out at Orvieto and the beautiful Umbrian countryside surrounding it :-)

Absolutely stunning! This reminds me of a church I saw in Sienna. It looks like it is made of candy. :-)

Yes Krista. I’m trying to think of the similar church in Siena ;-) I love the alternating bricks, it makes the building so stunning.
